2012 St. Patrick's Cup Schedule

Boru 2-10 v Celts 1-9

May 2, 2010 at Treasure Island
Boru 1-11 v Ulster 1-5

May 9, 2010 at Treasure Island
Boru 1-8 v Sean Treacy's 2-8

2010 St. Patrick's Cup

Sons of Boru: 1-8
Sean Treacy's: 2-8

In a game marred by constant fouling and dangerous play the Boru fell to Sean Treacy's which means a semi-final spot in the St. Patrick's cup. The Boru were shorthanded on the day and missing a few key players. Starting with the minimum 13 on the day the Boru looked as the better team. But 2 very soft goals by the Treacy's were the difference on the day.

I would like to write a report about a football match on this site but unfortunately the Treacy's did their best to turn this game into a melee. Unable to contain Kevin Dolan the Treacy's placed two players on him to take him out of the game. Which they did with blatant blows to his head and eventually splitting his jaw open, only to receive a yellow card.  The game was abruptly ended as the Boru were attacking for a late score when Mick Cunningham was punched in the ear causing severe bleeding.  Punches to the head especially the ear should be dealt with the maximum punishment. (will be interesting to see what happens)

After watching this game, it is no wonder that attendance is way down in local San Francisco games.  With the opening of Pairc na nGael and all the great behind the scenes work in the local GAA, the games are spiralling downward.  Now that we have a fine playing facility I believe its time that we reward fine play and strictly punish cheap dirty antics.

Over the past few weeks out at TI we have seen star players end up with a broken leg, dislocated shoulder/concussion, split jaw and severe bleeding from the ear. (just to name a few)  We must remember that all of our players must work especially in these poor economic times.  It would be a shame if these fine fields at TI are left vacant because footballers just don't feel its worth the physical abuse on a weekly basis in the summer time.  Its about time efforts are made to clean up the football in San Francisco.

Sons of Boru: 1-11
Ulster: 1-5

On a beautiful day at Treasure Island the Boru walked out as well deserved winners over Ulster.  The game was marred by an injury received by Denis McDonagh in the first five minutes of the second half.  Denis was having an outstanding game for the Boru and will be missed while he recovers from his broken collar bone.

The Boru started off slowly being held to no score after the first ten minutes being down 2 points to no score.  Denis McDonagh opened the scoring with a well taken free after the dangerous Kevin Dolan was fouled.  Boru then tacked on 5 more scores and walked off the field at half time leading 6 points to three.  Dolan, McDonagh and Sean Farr were dominant in the Boru taking their half time lead.

The second half started as the first half ended with the Boru on top.  A quick score put the lead up to 4 points and then came the injury to Denis McDonagh.  After a lengthy delay Mick Cunningham tapped over the free that Denis earned and the Boru went up 5 points. Then another point and then quickly there after a well deserved goal put the Boru up 9 points and never looked back.

The Boru were dominant in all aspects of the game and held on to walk away as deserved six point winners.  Next up for the Boru will be the Sean Treacy's who are also unbeaten.  This should be a good game to see who tops the tables in the 2010 St. Patrick's cup.

Sons of Boru: 2-10
Celts: 1-9

The Boru opened defense of their North American Championship with a victory over the Celts.  For a first outing of the year the Boru faired fairly well with a high scoreline of 2-10. Both teams were missing key players but their was no shortage of high intensity play through the entire game. The Boru dominated early stages of the game with Brian Reilly and Noel Brady controlling midfield early on. Kevin Dolan was creating havoc up front as was Denis McDonagh, Sean Farr and Mick Cunningham. Early season shooting woes left us not making the most of our opportunities.  Until a great goal my the great Cockney Collins got the ball rolling.

The second half started with the Celts Aidan O'Flynn asserting himself at midfield but the constant work rate of Andy Fogarty, Kevin Shannon and Kevin Reilly prevented the Celts from racking up scores.

A few late goal opportunities were turned away by Willie Russell. (who was very shy about making his 2010 debut) All in all not a bad start to the 2010 season. Next game is Sunday, May 2 against Ulster.

2009 North American Championship

Semi Final

Sons of Boru: 3-8
Armagh/Notre Dame (Boston): 3-7

The Boru dominated this game from the start but were unable to convert their hard work into scores.  Brian Reilly, Sean Farr and Bonnie Collins were dominating the middle of the field and sending plenty of supply of balls into the forward line.  Armagh/ND were able to put up a few early scores and be up by a point.  However the work rate of the above named players and half backs Alan Barrett and Marc Leddy was just two much for the Boston side.

After several minutes and adjusting to the narrow Boston field Kevin Dolan, Denis McDonagh, Mick Cunningham and Noel Brady proved to be too much for the Boston team to handle.  Scores started to become plentiful and the Boru marched out to a ten point lead.

However being Boston Champions you knew that Armagh/ND wouldn't lay down and they sure didn't.  Armagh/ND showed great grit and determination to storm back and grab some late goals to make the game a little to close for comfort.  Sean Farr then tok the ball up the field and took a great score to put our lead up to 4 points with only injury time remaining.  Armagh/ND didn't keep their heads down, they worked the ball up the field and swarmed the goal mouth to grab yet another goal to cut the lead to 1 point.  However time had come and the referee blew the final whistle with the Boru escaping with a well deserved one point vicoty.

Team: Conor Cosgrove, Bernard Brady, James McGovern, Mick Gavin, Marc Leddy, Alan Barrett, Sean Farr, Bonnie Collins, Mick Cunningham, Denis McDonagh, Noel Brady, Kevin Dolan, Brian Reilly. Subs: Gary McDermott for M. Cunningham, Joe Reilly for D.McDonagh.

Final

Sons of Boru: 5-11
Young Irelands (Philly): 1-6

After a close tough enconter just the day before the Boru returned to Canton to face a very good Young Irelands team that overpowered Connemara Gaels of Boston the previous day.

Young Irelands put up the first two scores to have a 2-0 lead five minutes into the game.  However corner back Bernard Brady completely outclassed Young Ireland's corner forward and Young Irelands were unable to register any scores for a significant portion of the first half.  At this time Brian Reilly and Sean Farr once again began to overpowere Young Irelands in the middle of the park and Kevin Dolan, Mick Cunningham and Noel Brady were constantly setting up scores and the Boru were coasting.  Young Irelands just had no answer and with backs like Mick Gavin, Alan Barrett and Marc Leddy completely dominating the half back line and racing up the field you knew that there was just no come back from the Young Irelands like Armagh/ND did the day before.

Kevin Dolan continued to show the class that earned him most valuable player of the North American Finals. The Boru kept tacking on points and goals to walk away with a 17 point victory over a very good Young Irelands team and claim the clubs first ever North American Intermediate championship.

In what was a clinical display of football 10 different Boru players scored. Kevin Dolan might have been MVP of the finals but in this reporters eye the class of the final was super sub Kevin Reilly's score from around 40 yards out after showing a fine display of fielding to win the ball.  It was a fine score Kevin but you should have passed the ball to your brother Joe who was standing wide open in front of you.

Team: Conor Cosgrove, Bernard Brady, James McGovern, Mick Gavin, Marc Leddy, Alan Barrett, Sean Farr, Bonnie Collins, Denis Mc Donagh, Noel Brady, Mick Cunningham, Kevin Dolan, Brian Reilly. Subs: Gary McDermott for M. Cunningham, Andy Fogarty for J. Mc Govern, Joe Reilly for D. Mc Donagh, Kevin Reilly for K. Dolan, Willie Russell for B. Brady.
